The Origins of AfricaBlack

The business model of AfricaBlack was conceptualised by Erina Nigrini during 2002 and commenced trading during 2003.

Today, this 100% women owned business, specialises in the sourcing and roasting of premium quality coffee beans and conducts a fully-fledged barista training school and coffee shop under one roof. 


To serve as many people as possible the joy of a perfect cup of coffee. 


The acquisition of premium quality coffee beans, and the careful roasting and attractive packaging of coffee. The continued growth of market share through the consistent application of basic core values and the fostering of lasting business relationships with like-minded suppliers of coffee and equipment.  To become an international household name.

Our own blends and single origin coffee range for the retail sector. 
High quality roasted coffee to the corporate and hospitality market.
Contract and private label roasting for clients.

Exquisite coffee shop with fresh in-season sandwiches and salads with a take-away section.

Barista Training School

Barista Training School, based on the World Barista Championship rules and regulations.

Selling of coffee equipment working with various equipment distributors.

Erina Maria Nigrini

Managing Director

Erina’s passion for coffee has been entrenched since childhood from the days when she grew up on a coffee farm in Zimbabwe.

She has extensive business experience in the coffee, restaurant and barista training and judging as well as marketing experience. She was the first South African to judge at the World Barista Championship in Atlanta, USA in 2009.

She is the founder of AfricaBlack and remains intricately involved in the business. Her hands-on approach and ability to overcome challenges are hallmarks of the growth and success of AfricaBlack over the years.

She was the first to conceptualise the horizontal and vertical integration of various disciplines of the coffee industry under one roof. Her foresight and ability to remain in touch with the latest trends provides a unique experience to customers.

Her preparedness to council others and share knowledge makes her approachable and contributes to the growth of the specialty coffee industry beyond the traditional borders.
